For the sixth time, a journalist at The Star has been named one of the recipients of the prestigious Khazanah-Wolfson Press Fellowship.
Starbiz business journalist Ganeshwaran Kana will spend 10 weeks under the programme at Cambridge University, United Kingdom, from April 15.
He was chosen after a meticulous screening by Khazanah Nasional Bhd and the Wolfson College of Cambridge.
Ganeshwaran, who holds an economics degree from Universiti Malaya and a master’s in business from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, will be conducting a research entitled “Leveraging the media to address economic inequality in a multiracial society”.
“I was very happy when my research topic was chosen. I hope to apply what I’ve learnt to become a better journalist.
“My research consists of discussions on how the media can be leveraged to address inequality in a multiracial country like Malaysia.
“It might be sensitive due to bumiputra and non-bumiputra disparity, but through my research, it is hoped that we can speak about it openly, and the media has to be without fear or favour in discussing it,” he said.
Ganeshwaran received his award letter from Khazanah Nasional managing director Datuk Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir at the company’s headquarters yesterday.
Amirul Feisal congratulated the recipients and said he hoped they could be leaders in their respective fields upon returning to Malaysia.
Also present at the ceremony was Star Media Group’s (SMG) Chief Content Officer Esther Ng.
“Ganeshwaran is the sixth journalist SMG is sending for this programme, which shows how much importance we place on it.
“The programme has been beneficial for us in so many ways. I’m confident that Ganeshwaran will keep the SMG flag flying high,” she said.
The Khazanah-Wolfson Press Fellowship is a fully sponsored initiative under the Khazanah Residency Programme and part of its effort to upskill media and communications professionals.
To date, Khazanah has sponsored 16 Malaysian journalists from mainstream print media, including The Star, The New Straits Times, Berita Harian, The Edge, Utusan Malaysia, Astro Awani, BFM and Bernama.
Khazanah has also sponsored eight Khazanah and Khazanah-linked company staff members for the fellowship.
Ganeshwaran will be joined by The Edge editor Tan Zhai Yun and Tenaga Nasional Bhd corporate branding head Shaiful Amrin Abdul Karim.
